PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Picture1(1)_1844760.png

With the ice melting around after a frigid couple of weeks that felt more like months, we can finally see and feel the sun again. As for safety professionals, now more than ever, we need that radiating energy to renew our thoughts and think about new beginnings…

But, don’t let your guard down while the sun is out; slips, trips, and falls cause nearly 700 fatalities per year and many more injuries in the workplace according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. See NIOSH’s recommendation to prevent slips, trips and falls.

As we are moving into a hybrid system for training and development in many areas, ASSP announced that Safety 2021 conference and expo will be moved to September as a hybrid event. You can read the announcement here. We are expecting more details in the next few weeks so stay tuned!

Stay strong, the sun is out!

In 2016, the CTA Board approved a major deal with China-based CSR/Sifang America Joint Venture to supply the city with the next generation of electrified railcars and in November 2020, CRRC Sifang America Inc, the subsidiary local facility of CSR/Sifang America Joint Venture delivered its first 10 prototype passenger rail cars to the city of Chicago on schedule amidst a global health crisis. From the start, ASSP Greater Chicago Chapter member Lu Li has been part of a stellar CRRC Sifang management team that reintroduced rolling stock manufacturing in the Chicago Far South Side after a nearly 60-year absence. Read More

Hygieneering recently provided COVID-19 risk reduction assessment services to a Chicago client at a dozen of their office facilities with portions that are occupied 24/7. The main components of the assessment were:

  • An operations review and measurements of their HVAC systems.
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) baseline monitoring for carbon dioxide, temperature, relative humidity, carbon monoxide and organic compounds.  Read More

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR EXECUTIVE BOARD
Mark Schakowsky, Chapter Treasurer
How did you get involved in the safety field and what drives your involvement?
My career began in the financial and risk management industries where I evaluated strategies companies used to optimize business capital and financial performance. This experience emphasized for me the vital role human capital plays when measuring the performance of an organization. My desire to help both companies and their employees led me to transition into the safety field where I can design and implement safety programs that enhance employee well-being while directly and indirectly impacting the bottom line of a company.

I joined ASSP to expand my knowledge of the safety industry and network with other passionate safety professionals. As the Treasurer of the Greater Chicago Chapter, I am excited to contribute to the chapter’s continued growth and provide value to our members and community.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Throughout COVID, I have worked to improve my cooking skills and try new recipes on the grill and crock pot. I am excited for warmer weather so I can start running along the lakefront again and am looking forward to getting back to my interests of traveling and playing hockey.
